Since we've entered mid-summer, you may have noticed gargantuan wasps invading your turf. These wasps are known as cicada killers or ground digging wasps and grow to an astounding 3 inches in size. While they appear to be very menacing, experts swear they are harmless. Who really wants to get close enough to find out? Not me.
There are several ways to eliminate this pest and give yourself peace of mind, without having to hire an exterminator. It can be done safely with the proper planning and the right tools to help you in your endeavor.
First, know your enemy. The cicada killer wasps are usually in sight during the day because they are hunting their primary prey--cicada, or locusts. Usually, they return to their homes at night.
Their homes consist of holes about the size of a nickel in bare spots in your yard. Sometimes a mound of loose dirt will be piled up around the entrance to their homes. The holes are usually 6-8 inches deep and house the female and her babies.
Once you have attacked each hole with either boric acid or hornet spray, the key to keeping these giant wasps from returning is to keep your yard saturated with water. These insects don't build homes in places where the ground is moist. Laying a piece of sod over the old holes and watering it is also a good idea, because the wasps prefer bare earth to dig their dens.
If you have tried to eliminate these wasps to no avail, or there are too many present to eliminate yourself, then you may have to call in an exterminator for professional help. The only disadvantage to hiring a professional is the increased cost.

When termites are found inside a home, there are generally two stages of treatment. The first and most important stage is to get them out of your house. When done right, this initial stage may also offer a shot at eliminating the nest responsible. Just remember though, these types of treatments don't actually protect your house and are only the first step. Nest location may be impossible to determine (it may not be on your property) and further treatment will almost always be required. You may also have several different nests nearby, all of which present a threat.
There are three commonly used types of first stage treatment. This article will discuss the pros and cons of each method.
Foaming in particular is very useful where large mudpacks of carton material (called bivouacs) are present in the wall or when there is a concealed void under concrete that cannot be otherwise accessed. When the foam is injected into the workings it expands (a little like shaving cream), coating all the surfaces and termites around it. The pest technician can control the type of foam he needs by adjusting the amount of foaming agent added to the mix.
There is no point in dusting long abandoned workings, live termites are definitely required here. With deft skill the technician gently puffs the dust through the galleries, coating as many termites as possible. He then moves on, dusting as many sites of activity as possible. The small breaches are quickly sealed afterwards to minimize disturbance.
Coated termites return to the nest and are groomed and fed, passing the toxin around. With sufficient numbers colony elimination can occur within 14 days though sometimes reapplications are required.
PRO - Neat and tidy, minimal damage added to what the termites have already done.
CON - Large numbers of termites required to guarantee colony elimination.
As you can see, termite specialists have a wide array of weapons to rid your home of termites. Of course, once they do get rid of them, then you will have to move on to protection. Future articles in this series will explore those methods of protection.

Bugs in Pasta
The absolute most important reason for having pest control at your property is health.
We all know what a nuisance rodents can be when they get into our homes. They scurry in our walls and above our heads during the night, they raid our food and ruin it with their feces, and they reproduce wildly, creating more and more inhabitants for us to worry about. Rats, mice and squirrels also do a lot of damage to your home's structure, insulation, pipes and even electrical wiring.
That's where the biggest problem comes in to play. While you can repair obvious damage, it's all too easy to miss a gnawed piece of wire when confronted with larger scale issues like insulation used as nesting, excrement contaminated floorboards and gnawed on support beams. However, a missed frayed wire can cause more damage than all of the other problems: it can cause an electrical fire in your home.
Why Do They Chew Wires?
The easiest way to prevent rodent-related house fires is to prevent rodents from entering your home in the first place. Because mice can enter holes of even 1/4 inch, you need to call a wildlife exclusion team to ensure that rodents cannot enter your home. These teams can both find and seal any problem areas to keep your home rodent free.
If you already have rodents, you should call a professional pest control team immediately. You may already have significant damage to your home from your rodent squatters, so once you've eliminated them from your home, ask your pest control team about ways to check for and repair rodent-created damages.
As always, install and frequently test a smoke detector in your house whether you have rodents or not. If a fire does occur, a smoke detector can save your life and the lives of your family.
