Your attic makes an ideal habitat for many unwanted animals including rodents and birds. While any infestation should be dealt with, birds can pose a significant nuisance as they can contaminate your attic not only with noise but bacteria and parasites as well. Nesting birds in your attic can even cause damage to your property as they scavenge for items to build a nest. Still, the most serious risk of birds in your attic is associated with their droppings as they harbour parasites, bacteria, moulds, and even viruses that are harmful to humans.

The three most common birds that nest in attics are Pigeons, Starlings and English Sparrows; woodpeckers are a distant fourth. The damage done by woodpeckers can be considerable. Pigeons, starlings and sparrows will use existing openings to gain entry while woodpeckers will create their own opening through wood. Pigeons can also be a nuisance nesting or roosting on the roof. They will nest in protected areas where roof pitches meet or where one roof overhangs another. Building by the water can also have gulls nesting on their roofs. Gulls are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. This means that a federal permit is required to remove nests and eggs. Gulls will aggressively defend their nests so be careful if you need to go onto a roof that gulls are nesting on.

If birds are roosting on the exterior of your home there are other exclusion devices available such as bird spikes, shock strips, repellents, netting and wire mesh. Bird droppings can be unsightly and birds wake up early in the morning and can disturb sleep. A professional can assess your particular situation and recommend the best solution.

Bedbug Removal: Tips for Getting Rid of Bedbugs

Regardless of what kind of pest you’ve got, it is better to get hold of a pest control company in Tampa when possible.

The debris of feral pigeons, the number one bird pest, collects and damages roofs, gutters, drain spouts, and rooftop air conditioning equipment. Their feces is not only highly unsightly and corrosive, it also represents a health risk because of all the fungi and parasites that live in it. You can place netting or build physical barriers to keep them away, but be prepared for a battle. They like to stay in whatever place they were born, they will eat just about anything they find, they know where to find water, and you can't trap and relocate them; remember, these things are descended from homing pigeons. See our article on how to get rid of pigeons.

Starlings and sparrows create most of the same problems as pigeons except that they have one more unpleasant trait: they drive native birds to extinction. These two types of intruders can be trapped and successfully relocated. They are so numerous; however, that as soon as you got rid of one group, they would quickly be replaced by others. Starlings are spooked by loud noises, and both types of birds may be discouraged by using mild electrical shock systems. When removing these birds, their nests should be destroyed.

Gulls can create the same problems as pigeons; however, these problems are mostly confined to coastal areas. As many airports tend to be located near bodies of water, gulls also represent a threat to air navigation. They may be discouraged through netting, electrical shock, noisemakers, or simulated predators.

* A product called BirdSlide puts an angled surface over L-shaped ledges such as roof overhangs, preventing birds from roosting.

* Another product, Daddi Longlegs, looks like a mobile sculpture, with long rods projecting from a central point. The whole thing rotates in the breeze, keeping larger birds from befouling street lights or rooftop air conditioning units, among other things.

* Rain gutter covers/spikes

* Traps: Trapping, where legal, must be only one step in a deterrent program, as new birds will invariably fill the places left by the removed birds.

* Squawkers: Audio devices that play electronic versions of species-specific distress calls or predator calls to scare the pests away.

* Balloons and Windsocks: Balloons with big eyes painted on them, fake spiders, and Mylar light reflecting streamers can all be used to frighten woodpeckers.

* Flavor deterrents include a substance that can be sprayed on siding or added to paint and stain to keep woodpeckers at bay. There is also a substance that, when sprayed on grass, will give it a flavor that Canada geese will not like.

And The Ants Go Marching On

The absolute most important reason for having pest control at your property is health.

Raccoons have no manners! They're slobs and the one staring at me didn't seem to really care about the niceties of eating. Bits of dry cat food were soaking up water from where it had been sloshed out of the water bowl. The bag of food I'd laid on a table was now torn open and about 10 pounds of cat chow was strewn across the floor.

This particular raccoon had come in through the pet door into the garage and was happily eating leftovers from my cat Spike's dinner bowl. He obviously had no fear of me, because he kept eating as I walked over to the work bench. Even though he appeared to half tamed, I was trying to keep a little distance between me and the raccoon.

Spike has a bed in the garage, in the house and on the deck. Whenever and wherever the mood strikes him to take a nap, he's not very far from a comfortable pillow. He has become adjusted to seeing raccoons and possums enter his garage at all hours of the night. Tonight he was sleeping on the bed that used to be my work bench before he took it over. He was now peering over the side of the cardboard box that was his bed, at the raccoon that was making a mess of his eating area.

I may have to try trapping the animal, but that didn't work out very well last year. I used a gage-like trap that is supposed to close the entry way into the cage when the animal tries to eat the canned cat food in the back of the cage. It's very humane. Of the five raccoons we had last year, none were caught. I did catch Spike...twice. I've never accused him of being smart!

If you have a 'possum get into your house, the best thing to do is to put a can of cat food just outside the door and let the animal go to the food. Then slam the door shut! They may scare you by hissing and snarling, but that's just their defensive mechanism. It's sort of scary when they bare their fifty teeth, but more than likely if you back away, they'll never hurt you. One good thing about confrontations with a 'possum is that they hardly ever get rabies.

I really hope they'll leave soon. Spike and I would like to get our garage back.
